To reduce financial risks it is necessary that the monthly expenses were minimal. Accordingly the server should be 1U in size.

The server part of the game is designed so that almost all can be run in megapolice. It is even possible to divide the task of rendering the game world across multiple servers.

Making some measurements, I decided that for 50,000 people online need 50Gb of RAM (again the article is not about why so much).

AMD — I tried to use the official AMD website, but unfortunately there it is impossible to understand:

In the free market there are server options 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x.
Option to purchase a motherboard with multiple connectors and to install there a complete kit I decided not to consider. Why? To buy equipment it is a lot of time, nerves and money. This is in contrast to a home computer.

Options 4x-8x CPU was incredibly expensive and even in the most modest of equipment was prohibitive for me price. Uniprocessor and twoprocessor system was for different niches of the market. Here processor list to consider (those that begin with "E5-4" — uninteresting, they are for 4 CPU system).

Immediately struck by the high base frequency and high burst, but the number of nuclei of a very small number.

Anyway remains quite a large selection of processors, what choices to make. I pay attention to consoles, type "L" or "W" or "A".

"L" is low power consumption. For me it is not interesting. If I would have had desks in a data center that would matter, but since I have 1U and any one data center does not want to put counter to my server — it is important.

"W" high energy consumption, A very good copy in the lineup. Pretty quickly, you notice that the remaining processors are divided into 2 groups. A small number of cores high frequency, a large number of cores+low frequency.

E5-2603, E5-2609, E5-2620, E5-2630, E5-2640, E5-2650, E5-2660.

Immediately rejected too weak processors: E5-2603, E5-2609, because the money definitely will be enough for 2pcs E5-2620.

Frequency E5-2630 vs E5-2650 no different. The only difference is +2 cores (and memory frequency a little more) and the price in 2 times more (+600$)! The second group is eliminated because of the price.

Differs only in the base frequency +10%, and the price is half as much. Clean version E5-2640. Incomprehensible overpayment to me.

Remind: at the level of ideas — I decided that I need ~50Gb of memory. On the Internet I found that the collection of server memory is not a multiple of two is perfectly acceptable.

But all the same. Reasons that all memory should work the same way — so I don't have steamed what is the core of how difficult the task to submit — I've decided that the amount of memory must be a multiple of two.

Accordingly, it turns out that it is necessary to put 64Gb of memory. The server part of the game is written in such a way that on the server side fully calculated all the gameplay.

Thus cheating is impossible. However, if memory is not enough to completely fit in the memory of all players online will be a little crash, the game just won't start, and I need to make a hotfix. To be able to spill to disk intermediate results.

LRDIMM is a server of conventional memory + some extra chips. Accordingly, the price +20% approximately.

For me respectively LRDIMM is not needed, because I don't set the memory in each slot.

Now the manufacturer. Among the server's memory it turns out the manufacturer doesn't matter. I'm not understand how this is possible — but fact. Synthetic tests are the same. Data memtest is about the same. For Kingston memory I found options: 2 options of saturation of the chips, but even in this case there is no functional difference.

The first time I made the desired server configuration — I wanted 1 on the 240gb ssd and one hdd at 2tb.

As you see, I have changed and understand what I need actually.
I had to know what ssd drives are very, very different. On servers it is better to use raid1.

That a new technology is NVMe, and she has a lot of options there. Raid controllers are very different for different tasks.

Let's order. Starting with "what do you want for the task?". Need 200Gb ssd drive that can withstand a lot of rewriting. And 2Tb hdd for reliable backups. "A lot of rewriting" — at a very rough calculation is 1-2Tb a day. Reliable backups — this means raid1 configuration. Hardware or software raid is the question of the size of the work, skill and responsibility in repairing the raid.

I was going to buy Western Digital due to the fact that I had a very positive experience with the use of hdd for home computers. But the Tisk said that they will only be able within weeks to make a replacement (warranty or not). And offered HGST said that it will be able to make a replacement during the day.

Then I found out that most ssd's fail not because of the grazing resource is overwritten, and because of the failure of the controller in the ssd. Yes, this raid will be relevant.

And here is a selection obtained between the pci-ssd (NVMe) and raid1-ssd. And with the above thought for me is definitely better pci-ssd.
