For the pioneers. On the waves with Jolla (UPD)

After the disappointment from action Nokia for the disbandment of all units of the Maemo/Meego has reached its maximum, in the Internet appeared rumors that a startup can revive this great OS and continue its development. Then there were all sorts of rumors, supposedly Nokia gave all the development of this startup (which, of course, was not). Soon surfaced and the name of this startup is Jolla. A year in the Internet got the pieces of information on the future phone, screenshots, news, ideas and finally, in December 2013, this phone appeared on the open market. First, in June opened a pre-order worth 100 euros, which were sent t-shirt and letter of thanks in the rendered trust and support, but the phone itself only came through six months this winter. Finally, I hold in my hand this long-awaited device and I want to share my impressions about it. Still, the phone is still rare and the opportunity to go to the store, to your hands "feel", yet.

Build
The unit itself is made of quality materials: metal bezel of the phone metal power button and volume rocker, glass Gorilla Glass. Everything is in order. But the charging wire and give the cheap — yet Nokia has already spoiled us with high quality materials. Comes without headphones, although if you look at headphones from Samsung, which has long been supplied with cellphones, I can say that it is better no that bad. But this stuff, as I use my headset.

front and rear
All the phones included is a matte white back cover, but the most devoted fans (who had made a prepayment on the first call in June) and orange cap with the inscription "the first one".

The phone is slightly larger than Nokia N9. On the one hand, easier typing on the vertical keyboard on the other, for example, it became more difficult to operate the phone with only one thumb. I like the form factor of the N9, because it lies well in your hand. By the way, I'm pretty damn comfortable and iPhohe: their shape is just perfect — neither big nor small, just what you need. You can easily use the phone with one hand. Here N9 is the same. Personally I can't understand fans of the big devices, like the Samsung Note, though I do acknowledge that fans of these smartphones lack. Jolla for me too is a little much, but quite a bit. Almost used.
the
First impression
I can say that after the excitement of a new purchase the verse, the first impression is disappointment. Jolla has positioned itself as a successor of Meego, but in fact it turned out that Sailfish OS created more of a "based on" and still very young. Common features of both OSes, of course, can be traced, but Jolla is often missing the functionality that I used on N9. Can't exactly say what the reason is: most likely, Nokia was not profitable to give away all their achievements and the two companies were disagreeing on matters of licensing agreements, it is felt. So you need to Sailfish OS with understanding. It's a young team and they now "saw" everything from the beginning.
the
Battery

the same kinds of settings for the batteries. The Nokia has the choice of installing eco-mode, Jolly while only the status of the batteries.
The second factor that unpleasant surprise, as is the battery. With minimal use, holds barely a day. Here it is necessary to clarify that my N9 is kept for at least two days, and when switched to the economy mode, then charge enough to have a Text at least half a day. Spravedlivosti it should be noted that on the N9 I used scheduler, which at night turned off all the services, and the phone was poisoned to sleep with me. In the morning, 5 minutes before lifting the phone up, connected to the network, updated and synced all the services, checked their mail and then happily turned on the alarm clock. This approach effectively saves the battery. Better get used to it and now this chip I really miss in Jølle. I really hope that it will be added in the next update, because the eco mode helped me dozens of times.
the
NFC
Well, the third factor is the lack of NFC. According to the specifications of the hardware and this module is present, but so far I have never found the option to read NFC tags. I hope that this functionality will soon be added to the firmware.
the
comparison with the Nokia N9

the New Jolla N9 is larger and has a more angular design
I could be wrong, but I think you know about Jolla only lovers novelties Yes fans Meego/Maemo, but mostly, of course, those few fans who have been betrayed and abandoned by the firm Nokia, as the soldiers of Napoleon after the defeat at Moscow. Therefore, wittingly or unwittingly, but start to compare this phone with the N9.
For starters, the organization of the working space. Have N9 had three workspaces, arranged horizontally. Jolly also have three, but they are located vertically. The OS is still completely based on gestures — swipes. For example, all system messages can be viewed, if you hold the bottom of the screen upwards. To go back, you need to pull a finger on the screen to the left, and if forward, to the right. To this kind of communication, speaking, quickly get used to, but the people who hold the camera for the first time in the hands, it can be easy to panic, because the additional hints in the form of arrows or buttons often?

the
app Store
It's a new platform, so do not expect a large number of different programs. At the moment, Jolla has launched its store called Jolla Harbour. Let's hope that the store will quickly grow with time.

Immediately need to mention about the support of Android applications, which has been loudly declared. First, the phone is only one store — Yandex.Store. And there applications is significantly less than the native Google Play and not all programs can be found. Second, each program runs in a sort of virtual Android OS. Can't say how this affects battery, but with a mind working pretty quickly. Of course, all styles taken from native Android and I would like to see in the style of new Sailfish OS. Well, on the forums, many complain that some apps are quite unstable, constantly getting out some errors. I myself am not really chasing a lot of Android apps, over time accustomed to certain, so have written a letter with a bow to the authors of my favorite apps from the platform Meego. Suddenly the fuse still remain and they will update. But many authors have already too lazy to redo its program for the new OS. Although wrote that the migration from Meego to Sailfish OS is not so painful, still the people have not yet warmed to the idea of a common revolutionary movement. Wait. But if all programmers-conservatives are inactive, have to take up the keyboard myself :)
the
GPS
Internal GPS receiver available, but not yet had a chance to try it. In such cloudy and dull weather, as now established in our latitudes, do not even try. What I can say that missing one important feature — the N9 was able to connect to an external receiver via Bluetooth. As Nokia Maps can be saved for offline use, this together gives an excellent opportunity to travel abroad when to use roaming expensive.

With equipment like this, I'm traveling the last couple of years. No problems.
Since the external receiver, the navigation maps, the satellite hardly spent batteries. During all the travel, I charged the phone once every two days in active use. So if you hear me now the developers at Jolla, then it's just a must-have. Integration into social networks can wait, it is better first to finish the really useful functions.

the look of the menu. The abundance of free space Jolly on this screen gives hope that there soon something will appear...
And I also want to note that the camera is not yet able to place geo-tags in photos. So I have been able to see on the map where you took a particular picture. What a pity! This function I always use, especially when traveling.

profiles of social networks for both phones. Most likely, in the near future Jolly this list will be more, although for me personally it is not critical.
the
Cool chips
What is unusual about this phone? Of course, not to say that this phone "only one million" — he's different and even unique. Already one can brag in front of others. Just kidding, of course. I'll try to tell more specific.
the
1. Removing elements
Common dialog box "Are you sure?" has long been all tired. For the first time in my memory, got rid of it in Gmail: there's a letter you can delete it with one click and at the top of the window for a few seconds hung message "Undo?" in case of error. It was a fresh decision, and now many products trying to use this approach. Jolla also devised a trick: if you remove it for 5 seconds in place of the removed item will show the fading the progress bar. If the deletion was done by mistake, this process can be quickly undone with just one tap. The screenshot below shows how it looks:

the screenshot On the left I delete a picture from the gallery, and on the right — an e-mail.
Delete messages, unnecessary accounts, contacts, and other things going on as well.
the
2. Work with icons of running applications
On Maemo, and then Meego was a cool killing feature: multitasking. You can "collapse" all apps and see only their thumbnails which are updated and shown what is happening in the program. A very cool thing, which allows quite easy to work with multiple programs and switch between them. But Jolla have gone further on these "thumbnails" are not only live display of the work programme, but the two main functions of the running application that can be activated without opening the program. Well, if you're running the player and you want to enable the next track, it does not need to open the whole program, you can click on it a small "preview" and move to the side. At first I did not understand the main advantages of this innovation, but now had to taste. Imagine the situation when you have a player and you want to connect a Bluetooth headset. You will need to switch between settings and player. So the player can not expand in order to click on the "play" button. It can be enabled through a minimized application. It is convenient. Thank you.
the
3. Pulley menus
Jolla redesigned how the context menu and their phone is the so-called Pulley menu — the context menu that POPs out to the top of the application. The idea: if you have chosen any item from the menu, once touch the screen and hold your finger, as it is stretched down the menu until the desired item is highlighted and only then let go. At first I missed, but during the day used to and now I think it's a very elegant solution.
the
4. Other half

Let me remind you that one of the main features of this apprarat is the so-called Other half — the other half of the device that will enhance its functionality, or just give possible to stylize the phone. In the simplest case, this is a common cover, made in different colors, but according to the authors in the cover, you can add new hardware capabilities, which will communicate by phone via the I2C connector. It may be an extra battery, hardvera keyboard, different sensors and receivers.
At the moment the second halves no sale. In the community gathered a lot of different ideas, but I don't know which of them will be implemented. Although there are real steps to create a prototype keyboard was the Nokia N900. And was even shown to the public the first functioning prototype of the other half — a module for wireless charging. Personally I'm only interested in more energy-intensive battery. I can live without all the newfangled bells and whistles, but a good battery now the weight of gold.
the
Result
At first sight, of course, all unfamiliar and new. I can't say what navigating the phone is intuitive, there are some serious observations on UX design, but it somehow quickly. Already in one night can get used to. Despite the fact that very much is not enough I still believe in future updates. Jolla, a small firm, there are only a couple of dozen programmers working, so do not expect them to swagger as from Android, which Google invested in full.
Everything is relative. Only when I play with another phone that I realized how Nokia N9 is a great phone. And when you consider that when he entered the market, the Android is still under the table foot went Apple stamped next model of the iPhone 4S, and it seemed to me that this phone had every chance to press competitors. Despite the fact that programs for N9 not so much, I can say that this phone is the developers have paid attention to the little things that create the beauty of owning a camera. Here is a very small example, which makes me happy every day: if you listen to long music file, for example, a podcast for half an hour, when stop the player and shut it off, the phone remembers where you stopped. But that's not all. When the next morning you open the player to continue the wiretap podcast of yesterday's unfinished, the player takes 10-20 seconds ago, so you could start listening with the latest offers and to remember what yesterday was about. The detail! And how uplifting. And so in all. Can't say that the phone is downright unique, but feels he is an adult. Still can't understand and forgive Nokia closing the Meego development, eh.
And comrades from Jolla I wish good luck! By the way, in Finnish the word "jolla" means a skiff, a small boat. As a joke by the developers, the idea of the name appeared from an analogy with a huge sinking ship and lifeboats. So these guys now have everything you need for a great start and further successful "float": the most faithful technofantasy, still warm rays of former glory of the mobile giant, last development and support from around the world. The main thing now — to try to justify the hopes. About devotion, I myself was surprised. Even after it became clear the beginning of the end, some programmers still continued to update the app, and then in the comments on Ovi Store were a lot of words of gratitude. For example, a couple of menaces ago it became known that Nokia finally closes support for Symbian and Meego, including Ovi Store, so after a couple of days a new update of the program Profilematic. Well, how can it be called? True geek love.
Someone said that the guys made Sailfish OS only to make it popular and then sell it to big giants of the mobile market. I really hope that this is only a delusion, or "to believe now?". I myself am always happy to support new startups and talented developers, so I wish them good luck in the new year. While we wait for the update!
Upd (6.01.2014):
As I suggested EuroElessar, there way to fix the leak izrashoduete battery. The fact is that despite the fact that the phone has a NFC, in the settings I couldn't find any. But nevertheless, he was always on and the monitor mate. As planned, the phone using NFC followed, what's the mate to it is connected and if that automatically changed the background and color scheme. A little dubious functionality, but it has had a significant impact on battery consumption. If you disable this service the phone, the battery may be as much as 4 days or more! The menu is nowhere to have this opportunity, so let's disable NFC via the console.
In order for the terminal to appear in the list of programs that need to enter development mode.

After turn on development mode and the menu appears to configure the connection to the phone via SSH
Once you turn on development mode, at the same time turn on remote connection. The phone to connect, we will not, but we have to enter the password that will be used for authorization su.
You can now log on to the console. Open the list of programs, and in the end we will have to the terminal. Open it and enter the command:
devel-su
systemctl stop tohd.service
For authorization, use the password that you entered in the settings of the remote connection via SSH.

After this simple operation, the Jolla phone will be able to stretch at least 3-4 days. I really hope that very soon in the new firmware after the upgrade this problem will be fixed in the settings, scroll to disable NFC. But anyway, the developers already know about this bug.
