The style or lack of it?

Offer readers of Habrahabr translation notes "Style vs No Style" blog Sacha Grief.

Recently I (ie, the author of the original text – ed. interpreter) there was an interesting exchange of views with Jin Yang (chief designer StackExchange). It all started with my tweet of my article "a guide to the choice of the designer", where I, in particular, suggest:
"... choose a designer whose style at the moment best meets your needs"

I even quoted Jason Cohen:
"do Not tire of repeating: designers will not change their style to yours." What Jun Yang said: "If I hired a designer, I would choose someone who's own style is not"

So is the "style" is so bad? I'm afraid I have to argue with Yang om.

the

What does "style"

Before to explain my opinion, I will sign what you mean by "style".

For me it is primarily the visual style. Fonts, colors, shapes or icons used – all that it includes. This also applies to the thickness of the lines, light and reflections, gradients, shadows, etc.

For example, Metalab known for high-definition designs, with characteristic accents in 1 pixel and dynamic colors, as well as addiction to fonts from Hoefles & Frere-Jones.

Another great example of the distinctive style of work Tim Boelaar. It focuses on clean simple lines of uniform thickness, which, however, does not make his schedule less complicated. It instantly recognized the author (although this way now and became popular – approx. interpreter).

However "style" is not limited to the purely visual side. Perhaps your style also includes themselves means of expression, as did Dana Tanamachi drawing on the chalk Board.

the

what's the point?

And yet, why is stil needed? In my understanding it is also a way of saying that the necessary focus on anything. Not in vain "and Shvets, and the Reaper, and on dude igrets" is often pronounced with irony.

Decide whether you want to possess everything or to be a true master in certain areas (for instance, I love the second option).

The presence of style justifies temporary short to anything as long as it is not close to perfection.

It also means that later you will choose because you would want to work you. Already not because you are cheaper, closer or do not have orders, but because people will like what you are doing. Own style helps you avoid passive performance.

the

Hammers and nails

Or maybe your style is bad for this project? Or worse – because of him you are in demand?

But note, the aforementioned Dana Tanamichi not invited for development of web applications (as far as I know), and I, in turn, was not seen anywhere in the drawing on the Board. Is it bad?

In General, don't be afraid of style. They say that when you have a hammer, everything becomes like nails. But we remember that in the Toolbox there are still a lot of screwdrivers, pliers and screwdrivers. So keep knocking!
